Getting Paid
Chasing late payments: what actually works
Late payments are annoying. More importantly, they are the single biggest threat to freelance cash flow. A survey of UK freelancers found that 71% had experienced late payment in the past year, with the average delay being 15 days past terms.
Prevention beats chasing
The best late payment strategy starts before you send the invoice. Your payment terms, contract language, and invoicing process determine whether you get paid on time.
- Use 14-day payment terms, not 30. Shorter terms get paid faster
- Send invoices the day the work is delivered, not at month end
- Include your bank details on every invoice, remove friction
- For new clients, request 50% upfront before starting work
- Add a late payment clause to your contract (statutory interest in the UK is 8% + Bank of England base rate)
The follow-up sequence
When a payment is late, follow up promptly and professionally. Most late payments are administrative, not malicious. A simple nudge usually resolves it.
If there is no response after 3-5 days, follow up again with a slightly firmer tone. Attach the invoice again and mention your payment terms.
“The biggest game changer for me was sending invoices immediately when work was done instead of batching at month end. Cut my average payment time from 35 days to 12.”

When to escalate
If two follow-ups produce nothing, it is time to escalate. In the UK, you can use the Late Payment of Commercial Debts Act to charge interest and compensation. In the US, small claims court is an option for amounts under the state threshold.
Before going legal, try a final "formal notice" email that mentions your right to charge interest. This often prompts payment; most clients do not want the hassle of a formal dispute.
Protecting your cash flow
While you chase payments, your bills do not stop. This is why understanding your safety margin matters, knowing how long your current cash lasts gives you the confidence to enforce your payment terms rather than accepting whatever timeline the client dictates.
